2015 Coeur d’Alene Art Auction / Lot 98
The man casting in this watercolor is Samuel Webb (1912-1988) who commissioned the work from Ogden Pleissner. The painting takes place at Middle Camp on the Cascapedia River in Quebec, Canada. Samuel Webb was the son of James Watson Webb II (1884-1960) who was a member of the distinguished Vanderbilt family as well as an American polo champion. His mother was Electra Havemeyer Webb (1888-1960) who was the creator of the Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, Vermont, and her collection of American art antiques is the core of the Museum’s collection. Samuel Webb continued his mother’s legacy as a life-long patron of the arts.
