VERSO
Signed with artist’s description

Time of the Cold Maker was awarded the National Academy of Western Art’s Gold Medal in Oil in 1976. It was reproduced as a limited-edition print by The Greenwich Workshop.

Describing this painting the artist wrote, “The Mandans were a proud, prosperous people living on the Missouri River in North Dakota. The winters were severe then, as now, and horses were kept in brush corrals along the river bottoms where they fed on the inner bark of the cottonwoods. It was the custom to bring their favorite horses into the lodges at night for protection against the cold and thievery. George Catlin described these people in his journal, tho he did not winter there.”
