According to Van Deren Coke in Taos and Santa Fe: The Artist’s Environment, “Using rich, heavy pigment, Ufer convincingly portrayed the sharp light of the Southwest. Never taking an intellectual approach, he assembled the components of his pictures in such a manner that little was left to the imagination. There was no symbolism or evidence of introspection, nothing of the objectivity of Berninghaus or Sharp, but rather an art that depended upon the subject to speak for itself. Ufer seemed fascinated by his ability to paint easily recognizable forms in an anecdotal manner. This characteristic is not only evident in his selection of subjects but also in his choice of colors.”
