Henry Raschen was born in Oldenburg, Germany on October 2, 1854 and immigrated with his parents to California. Having shown artistic talent at an early age, he began art studies in the studio of Joseph Harrington. When the San Francisco Art Association opened the School of Design, he was one of the first pupils to enroll.

In 1886, Raschen was on the expedition with General Nelson A. Miles when Geronimo was captured. He visited Geronimo in prison at Fort Sill where the two became friends. Raschen was reported to be the only artist who painted Geronimo from life, completing several paintings of him as well as recording the tribal life of the Apache.
