According to the artist, "The transformation of an adolescent male into an adult member of society, and into a warrior and hunter, was accomplished in the horse cultures of the West through individual war acts. Defeating an enemy in hand-to-hand combat, counting coup, and above all, stealing an enemy’s horses, were the crucial acts of life that defined a young man, and would eventually determine his status in the tribe."
