According to the artist, “I have had this painting in the back of my mind for nearly a year. A recent full moon rekindled my desire to attempt to tackle this difficult subject. Traditional sketches and plein air paintings are of no use. Neither are photographs, since they turn out black, even on a tripod. I had to depend on written notes, and trying to describe what I could see with words. It took repeated observations of moonlight, at times until 2:00 am. I attempted to portray the subtleties of moonlight as accurately as possible as seen by the eye. My fascination spread to a scientific study of moonlight as well as research of past masters of the genre.”
