According to the artist, “Little Horse, Chief of the Oglala Sioux, lived in the latter decades of the nineteenth century. He was famous among his fellow tribesmen as well as white Americans. The Oglala Chiefs and their people were known for the wisdom of their sayings; some called them the givers of wisdom. The following sayings were handed down to us from the Oglala Chiefs as well as the Lakota people. ‘If the Great Spirit had desired me to be a white man he would have made me so in the first place. It is not necessary for eagles to be crows.’ ‘Knowledge is given through all things. The world is our library.’ ‘Look at me - I am poor and naked, but I am the chief of a nation. We do not want riches, but we do want to train our children right. Riches will do us no good. We can not take them with us to the other world. We do not want riches. We want peace and love.’”
