According to William Edgar Paxson, Jr., “In 1912, Edgar and Russell again got together to paint. The occasion was their being commissioned, along with Montana landscapist Ralph DeCamp, to do murals for the new state capitol. They worked apart on the murals, but they occasionally got together at DeCamp’s studio. There are stories of a few easel paintings on which all three painted. The author has identified one such painting, largely DeCamp’s work and signed by him. Edgar’s work is clearly distinguishable in it, mostly on the lower left. Artist Shorty Shope, who as a youth was a frequent visior to Edgar’s studio and also was acquainted with Russell and DeCamp, viewed the painting and indicated that Russell probably painted some of the mountains and the sky.”
