Alaskan artist Rusty Heurlin once wrote, “Not until the early thirties did I meet him [Laurence]-a day long to be remembered in meeting him and Jeanne too. Right away I was taken to his studio and what a sight I did see. Reproductions of his Mt. McKinley paintings were familiar to me but now I saw his originals-marine and hill and mountain scenes all rich in color and beautiful in tone. But I have no words to describe these first originals I saw that day in his studio or should I try, as each painting spoke of things this master, who always mixed feeling with medium, was successful in getting across to the connoisseur, the native or the common man on the street.”
