Rendezvous Revelers

According to William Ahrendt, “In the early 19th century, profit from beaver pelts attracted hearty trappers who chose a hard and lonely way of life in the uncharted mountains of the west where beaver were found in abundance. Each year a rendezvous was held where fur buyers purchased pelts from the trappers. This painting depicts mountain men, after a rugged year in the wild, enjoying the opportunity to celebrate their survival, swap tall tales and revel in one another’s company.”
