Night Suspect was first exhibited at the Royal Society of Marine Painters in London. Dawson, who served in the British Navy Reserve, was familiar with the steam and sail warships that guarded the English Channel. The action filled painting depicts Revenues Service men firing on a brigantine as it approaches Deal, known for being a safe haven for smugglers.
