The artist wrote, “Plantin’ came about in late 1959. The range burial bronze had an operatic staginess. The setting is like a formal platform with actors arranged on its various sandstone levels. I wanted to simplify and make it much more spartan, emphasizing action turned to though, the activity of inner reflection by the men around the grave.”
