VERSO
Label, Kennedy Galleries, New York, New York

An original bill of sale from Kennedy Galleries will accompany the lot.

Although undated, the subject matter as well as the style of Sea and Rocks suggest that the painting was executed around 1872. It was during this trip to California that Albert Bierstadt spent time in San Francisco, and in the spring, visited the Farallon Islands twenty-six miles away. His paintings of this coastal region, including the Seal Rock subjects, demonstrate his fascination with dramatic light effects, and his artistry in the handling of the roiling surf.
