The artist writes, “Native people recognized that certain tracts of land were sacred and not to be trespassed upon. The Black Hills area of South Dakota and Wyoming was an example of this kind of conviction and the Lakota people fiercely protected it. This painting depicts three warriors on a high crag overlooking a sacred valley. Intruders have been discovered and will be continuously watched with suspicion and possible intervention.”
