Born in Germany, Richard Lorenz immigrated to American at the urging of William Wehner who recruited German artists to work on historical panoramas. Lorenz began an extensive trip to the West in 1887 and spent time along the Big Horn River that flows through the Crow reservation. His travels in Montana and Wyoming furthered his desire to become a painter and illustrator of dramatic western scenes.
