“Evening on Blackfeet Res. Montana (Little Crow’s tepee & medicine bundle)”
Label, J. Mark Sublette Gallery, Tucson, AZ
According to Donald J. Hagerty, “...Dixon accepted an invitation from the Great Northern railroad in 1917 to paint in Glacier National Park and among the Blackfeet Indians, the railroad’s primary tourist attractions. In early August 1917, Dixon departed for Glacier National Park, accompanied by his young daughter, Constance... While in Glacier, Dixon briefly visited with Charles M. Russell at Russell’s Bull Head Lodge on the edge of Lake MacDonald. Dixon had first met Russell in New York, and, though never close friends, they respected each other’s formidable knowledge about the West. But this was not Maynard Dixon country, for he needed affirmation from the bold outlines of land and the faraway horizons un-obscured by layers of trees.
“Dixon then moved on to the north fork of Cutbank Creek on Glacier’s east side and to the town of Browning on the Blackfeet Reservation. He spent nearly a month at several Blackfeet encampments, impressed by his host’s hospitality and the picturesque lodgings. Among his paintings of the Blackfeet encampment at Cut Bank is Evening on the Blackfeet Reservation, glowing with the suffused light of approaching dusk.”
