John Gamble’s father worked for the Pacific Mail Steamship Company, and when John was a teenager his family moved from New Jersey to Auckland, New Zealand. At 20, John went to San Francisco and began his art training at the School of Design, later further training in Paris before returning to San Francisco to open a studio. With the devastating earthquake of 1906, his studio and much of the city went up in flames causing Gamble to relocate in Santa Barbara where he remained for the rest of his life. The nearby coast became his favorite subject, one that was highlighted by poppies, lupine and other wild flowers played against the greens and purples of the California hills.

Condition ReportSurface condition is very good. Painting has been lined. Several hairline cracks in sky. No signs of restoration.
