According to the artist, “After the end of the American Civil War the role of the US Army shrank from a huge, mostly conscripted force of infantry units, to a few regiments of cavalry. These ranks not only drew professional soldiers from the Union Army, but from the South as well. It was the only life these soldiers had known. Their job was to man the forts the army had built in Indian country. For over 50 years, according to historian Sir Alistair Cooke, ‘The United States Cavalry was the traveling civilian’s protector on the frontier.’ Their duties were harsh and demanding, lonely and desolate, tedious and terrifying, at times, all for fifty cents a day and only a cold page in the history books to mark their passing.”
