Don Hedgpeth, author of Howard Terpning: Spirit of the Plains People, wrote, “Warriors who ranged and raided outside their own tribe’s territory staked their lives on horses that were swift, surefooted and certain. Riding full-out in broken country and plunging down steep, rocky slopes called for a large measure of trust on the part of both the man and the mount. Retribution could come riding fast behind, and the best horses would give everything they had for the masters. Bravery was a trait attributed not only to men who engaged in warfare on the plains; good horses were their able allies, and horses too became heroes among the People.”
