The artist wrote, “It is very difficult to resist the temptation to freeze the action in a situation such as this. Yet, you know that such a confrontation of hounds and cat is a riot of sound and movement. Something of that spirit must be caught in the painting by any means at all. Here, for one thing, the setting is largely unexplained because a riveting battle of this sort would totally dominate your awareness. As the stage director of this scene, you can make certain that the viewer shares your pre-occupation with the action by supplying him with few if any diversions. There is an overall brightness of light and color, this to further underline the excitement of the situation....”
