The artist wrote, “There’s a feeling that if art doesn’t depict a world that is depressing, dark and grinding, it isn’t real. That life is ugly so art must be ugly. It must speak to the bad. I can’t buy that. Real, serious art should have the ability to inspire, to better people’s lives, to be uplifting.

“I have a goal, yes, to make something—mankind, land, animals—beautiful, and to that end I use my brush to present the American West, its beauty and its spacious promise.”
