George Browne, the artist’s son and a great wildlife artist in his own right, modeled for this painting. His daughter Isabel still has the clothes her father wore.

The Waterhole is in its original Newcomb-Macklin frame and is recorded in the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Inventory of American Paintings.
