2024 Coeur d’Alene Art Auction / Lot 257
In discussing this painting the artist wrote, “A young mother patiently waits for the cradleboard to be finished. In the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) culture the female line or clan is the family into which a child is born. The maternal uncle and aunt become the secondary parents for the child, so in this case the cradleboard, also known as the ‘Second Mother,’ is being made by the maternal uncle who seems unfazed by the family’s social gathering around him.”
