According to Elmer Kelton, “Few people today realize the extent of the trading network that existed among Indians before the white man dominated the continent. Items from either coast found their way to the interior of the country, so that plains Indians might decorate themselves with seashells from a thousand or more miles away. Here Zandra Apple, an Oglala Sioux, wears a dress decorated with shells in a style that her grandmothers and great-grandmothers might have worn more than a hundred years ago. She holds an eagle-wing fan, often used for ceremonial purposes.”
