The artist writes, “The title comes from a letter written in 1854 by Chief Seattle to President Polk regarding the ‘sale’ of his land to the federal government. The quote about rivers continues, ‘They carry our canoes and feed our children.’ Thus illustrating the anthropomorphic regard the native peoples have for the world in which they live.

“The waters here depicted hold in their stream bed an intelligible record of all the large grazing animals that passed here and paused to drink within the last hour, thereby providing an open ‘menu’ for those sensitive enough to read it.”
