In 1823, Spotted Tail was born in the White River country of present-day South Dakota. Like many young Sioux he was great warrior but as time went on, he could see the futility of opposing the white incursions onto Indian land. He chose to become a spokesman for peace and defended the rights of his tribe. Henry Farny made his first trip West in 1881, stopping at Fort Yates on the Missouri River. While there, he visited the nearby Standing Rock Agency where he would have encountered Spotted Tail.
