The artist writes, “We know that ‘the hunt’ has always been necessary for survival, as well as a competitive sport among friends. This painting illustrates just such a moment when two mountain men and two Indians search the deep woods together looking for fresh game. The painting’s title has a double meaning, as their stealth and stalking of an elk herd has presented them with a ‘perfect shot.’ At this point, the mountain men and their guns have taken a back seat in the action as they watch their Native American friend draw back his bow. If his arrow hit its mark and he makes The Perfect Shot, he will have another victorious hunting story to share around the camp fire.”
