Describing his painting the artist wrote, “Clams and other shellfish were an important food source for Woodland Indians. They were often baked over heated rocks along with corn and other vegetables. French Creek was a favorite spot for the Indians to go for clams, as it had one of the largest varieties and most abundant supplies in the region.”
