John S. McCormick, who acquired this painting in 1936, was a personal friend of the artist. The two men shared a great affection for the outdoors and were hunting and fishing companions for many years. In 1947, McCormick sold Pleissner a parcel of his land in Pawlett, Vermont, where the artist built a house and studio, which served as his base for the next thirty years.
