Around 1900, Walter Cooper, a prominent Montana pioneer, wrote A Most Desperate Situation. A decade or more later, he commissioned Russell to provide pen and ink drawings for the text. After disappearing for almost 80 years, the unpublished manuscript and Russell’s accompanying artwork were discovered in 2000 and A Most Desperate Situation was finally printed.

A letter dated August 17, 1982 from Frederic G. Renner authenticating and discussing The Great Foot Race will accompany the lot.
