Chartered in 1915, the Emard Salmon Cannery on the bank of Ship Creek in Anchorage, was among the town’s first buildings. in Early Anchorage Alaskan Salmon Cannery, Laurence presents a tranquil view of what was at the time, the economic backbone of the Pacific Northwest. in 1909, firms operating in the salmon cannery industry, from San Francisco northward, unified as the Alaskan Packers Association. Its ‘star’ ships hauled canning supplies and men to the north and returned with tin-packed fish. Its operations, including the Emard Cannery, ran for twenty years.
