According to Larry Len Peterson, “Entering a contest held by P. F. Collier and Son, Goodwin submitted Hiawatha and the Pearl Feather. His large oil won first prize and was used as the frontispiece for a volume of American Poetry by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and William Cullen Bryant.”

Large spot of inpainting in upper-right corner, corresponding with patch on back (1” x 1/2”). Multiple spots of inpainting in upper-left corner. Several spots of inpainting along bottom, to left of signature.
