According to Julie Schimmel in Henry Farny Paints the Far West, “...Farny’s upbringing in a politically aware family, and his familiarity with the conditions of Indian life on the reservations, shaped a number of the images he created like none painted by any other western American artist. If Farny’s Indian figures appear immobilized, so were the reservation Indians whose lives he witnessed. Federal rations had replaced wild game and plants. Increasingly, log cabins replaced wigwams, clothing was store-bought, and English and Christianity taught in boarding schools eroded spiritual traditions and language. While tribal governance and customs certainly would not disappear, the past could never be revisited—except in art.”
