Little is known about the life and career of John N. Hess. He studied with Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and was active as an outdoor, sporting, and animal painter during the 1870s and 1880s.

Condition ReportSurface condition is very good. Painting has been lined. Hairline cracks in sky, cattle, and horse. Several small spots of inpainting in sky. Three spots of inpainting in lower-left corner, half-inch above signature, at edge frame.
