Montana Winter is recorded in the C. M. Russell Catalogue Raisonné as reference number CR.NE.105.

Russell historian Rick Stewart wrote, “Other than man, the buffalo’s greatest predator was the wolf. Early white observers, including the artist George Catlin, described how packs of wolves would single out young or infirm animals to kill. They were able to do this in the midst of a herd because the other buffalo seemed indifferent and did not intervene. The Indians took advantage of this curious trait and frequently disguised themselves in wolfskins to approach and kill the unsuspecting beasts.”
