Describing this painting Elmer Kelton wrote, “An army patrol scours the dry and dusty but spectacular canyon country in search of hostiles, who hide easily in the endless labyrinths. Even if the troopers encounter no enemy, each patrol across unfamiliar land unwraps its mysteries. In this way the army mapped vast regions previously unknown except to Indians.”

The Long Knives was released as a limited edition print by The Greenwich Workshop in March 1985.
