Typed description written by the artist:
U.S. Dragoons in Texas 1851. Anyone who has ever walked thru a dense patch of lechugilla cactus can testify as to its potential for harm to man + beast. Obliged to traverse a concentral growth, a dragoon patrol wisely walks its horses. These troops were the forerunner of the U.S. Cavalry, their shako hats derived from existing French patterns + lasted from 1851 to the eve of the Civil War. The saddle of the day was a Grimsley, secured with a circingle.”
