Describing this painting the artist wrote, “Present day bison herds cannot compare with the sheer number of animals portrayed in this 19th-century migration. Having envisioned this painting for some time, I made a special trip last fall to see the several thousand bison that roam the Wind Cave National Park and Custer State Park. Valley of the Past resulted from my observations of these great beasts and imagining the vastness of their once great habitat. I borrowed this title from a line penned by Charles ‘Badger’ Clark, the famed first Poet Laureate of South Dakota.”
