According to the artist, “Prairie Fire illustrates a moment that often confronted all frontier cultures of the dry western landscape. This northern plains tribe is scrambling to save what it can as it packs up tipis and belongings, hoping to escape to a place of safety. If they were lucky, a river or body of water was close by that would offer some sanctuary.

“Creating a dramatic painting like this comes about as a result of my constant wonder at how peoples were able to survive in earlier times. I want to imagine that the village survived with a minimum amount of lost resources. The painting is symbolically about the strength and resilience of the human spirit, especially when faced with the great and destructive forces of nature.”
