According to Paul F. Starrs, Ph.D. in an exhibition catalog, “Even the construction of this effort is vintage Borein; the action, set over on the left, harbors the promise of exploding across the entire painting. no one seems especially concerned about this—the rider has one foot firmly in his oxbow stirrup and seems settled in for the long haul. His side-rider is keeping an eye on things, just in case, and keeping the action a respectable distance from the cattle herd.”
